reBOUNDS + RESONances in IVORY TOWers

SOLO EXHIBITION, 2017

The Ivory Tower. New media. 40” X 33”

Solo Exhibition at MAWA, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

An abundance of articles and reports about longstanding persistent sexist problems in universities across North America informed the content of this art. Although attention is given to the situation in Canadian universities, a particular focus is given to ones within Manitoba for this artwork.

Existent sexist attitudes remain strong in our universities across Canada and internationally. Indeed, sexism is alive and thriving within the hallowed walls of Canadian academia evident in such aspects as female professors’ salaries which are consistently lower than those of male professors even though tactics have been in place to combat this; and old boys’ networks are robust. Additionally, within the ivory towers there persist violence and safety issues against women, gender bias hiring and promotion practices, and inordinately disproportionate amount of grants and awards given to male in comparison to female academics.
